antepartum – occurring or existing before birth; “the prenatal period”; “antenatal care”
Informational:These doulas are a wealth of resources and information: providing the mom with website support groups, books, and any information they might need. This doula also networks with others that work with expectant moms, such as massage therapists, belly casters, pregnancy photographers, and others who might be helpful.
Emotional: Helping the mother come to terms with the issues she’s facing, help her to focus on her task at hand of creating a healthy baby. One-on-one support at this time can be crucial, because this will effect how she views the pregnancy and the birth. Encouragement for the mother is really important. She needs to feel that she is still in control, and that what she is doing for her baby is a gift only she can give. As the pregnancy progresses, the continued support can help the mother have a better outlook. The mother knows she has someone that she can talk to that doesn’t have an opinion, and is there to support her when she needs her. Someone that really listens to how she feels.
Practical:Sibling care, running errands, basic meal preparation, light housekeeping, assistance with creating a command center around the mother on bedrest are concerns of the Antepartum Doula. These tasks are tailored to each family’s needs, so more or less may be needed from the doula.
