Postpartum Doula

Welcoming a new member to the family is exciting and sometimes overwhelming..

I’m there for the evolving family as they adjust to their new roles as parents(for the first time or the seventh time) and helping siblings to get to know their new baby brother/sister.

My role as a postpartum doula is fluid and changes with each new family I work with. So lets meet up around 32-36 weeks and talk about what you’re looking for in postpartum support.

Often when you read about what a ‘Postpartum doula’ is ..you’ll find the term ‘Mothering the mother’ and that’s what I’m there to do!

Emotional Support:

-Supporting the new parents without judgement

-Assisting the parents find the best way for them to bond & feel close with the new baby

-Validating the many different feelings during this adjustment period (for mom or for dad)

-Seeing the signs of ‘Baby blues’ or Postpartum depression and being a good listener during this time

-Suggesting ways of making the siblings feel like they are apart of something special in their role as Big Brother/Big Sister

The Physical:

-Creating a nurturing, restful atmosphere in which parents may eat, shower and nap

-Joining mom on outings to the doctors, support groups, ect

-Taking care of the baby while the parents spend some time with the older children or taking time out for themselves

-Fixing easy/healthy meals for siblings or a light lunch/dinner for the family

-Light household work: dishes, laundry, straightening up

-Helping mom take care of her postpartum body (sitz baths, c-section care, ect)

-Running errands

Education:

-Breastfeeding support and getting you through the first few days

-Guidance in Bottle-feeding(helping pick from the many kinds of bottles/nipples that are out there!) and pacifier use

-Demonstrating and supporting newborn care (soothing, burping, cord care, baby wearing, ect)

-Providing referrals to appropriate professionals and support groups in your area

-Having access to my lending library of books, magazines on everything baby/birth/postpartum/ect

In-Hospital Postpartum Doula Support:

Staying in the room with you after deliver- for a few hours or overnight when dad might have to stay home with other children. This is especially important to moms recovering from a c-section/multiples/wanting baby to room in and get started with breastfeeding.
